Laundry Care Guide: Washing, Drying and Fresh-Smelling Fabrics
Good laundry care starts with the fabric label, a suitable detergent and thorough drying. Fragrance can be a finishing touch. These practical checks help you build a routine for clothes, towels and bed linen.
1. Sort by care requirements
Separate items by colour, fabric and the wash instructions on their labels. New or strongly coloured items may need separate washing. Do not assume that every dark or bright item can share the same programme.
2. Choose and measure detergent
Use a detergent suitable for the fabric and follow its dose for the load, soil level and local water hardness. Wool and other delicate materials may need a dedicated product. More detergent is not automatically better.
3. Use the right load size
Check your washing machine's programme-specific capacity. Delicate programmes may allow much less than the machine's headline capacity. Clothes need room to move; avoid forcing extra items into the drum.
4. Treat stains according to the fabric
Follow the garment and stain-remover instructions. Test a suitable treatment on an inconspicuous area when directed. Check the stain before drying, and avoid heat until you have followed the recommended treatment.
5. Add fragrance separately
For Love for Laundry, measure 5–10 ml into the fabric softener compartment according to the bottle's directions. Add detergent separately in its usual place. Laundry perfume adds scent; it is not detergent or fabric softener. Wipe spills immediately.
6. Remove and dry promptly
Take washing out when the cycle ends. Follow the drying symbols on the care label, leave room around items on an airer and ensure everything is fully dry before storing. Read our indoor drying guide.
7. Maintain the machine
Follow the appliance manual for cleaning the detergent drawer, door seal and accessible filter. Use its recommended maintenance cycle and cleaning products. For a tumble dryer, follow the instructions for clearing lint and maintaining airflow.
8. Avoid unnecessary repeat washes
Choose the correct programme and dose first time, and dry items properly. Use lower temperatures where the care label, detergent instructions and cleaning needs allow.
